There 2 basic types: single line and loop line. The loop type goes around the drum and returns to cockpit you pull on one side until the sail is wound up (or out). The single type works like a window shade, with the sail rolled on the fore stay all of the line is off the drum and the extra is in the cockpit. When you want to unfurl the sail you pull on the sheets and the sail unrolls at the same time your furl line winds up on the drum. Ideally when the sail is all the way out the line is wound on the drum. To furl the sail reverse the process, you pull the line and the sail winds up on the fore stay.
On my boat, I have learned to apply some constant pressure to the furl line as I roll out the sail. This keeps the furl line from tangling on the drum (not good as the only remedy is to go forward and untangle. It only seems to happen in high winds, just when you want to not go forward.
