It also reflects the required banding. So if the banding is still present on
the boom that easy to measure.

Since the goal is to tell if the mast is 34’ or 36 feet he could simple hoist a
35 foot line and it will either touch the deck or be short. Eventually he’ll
learn to tune the mast and learn he needs a 50 foot steel tape but for a close
guess a line will do.

You are right, I was going by the specs for the 2 boats and they are based on
sail size.

Joe,

I believe the boom is the same length on the tall and standard rigs, or at
least it is on my boat. (tall rig)

However, the length of the foot of the sail is definitely shorter on the tall
rig. Keep in mind the OEM traveller is in the same spot on the standard and
tall rig, so it wouldn't make sense for the boom to be a different length.

The simple answer is does it have a bow sprit or standard no sprit bow. The
Tall Rig has a small (wooden) bow sprit. Also the boom is different in the
tall rig. The boom on the Standard Rig is 10’ 6” and Tall Rig the boom is 9’ 8”
(yes shorter boom on the tall rig). Obviously the mast is taller, but just 1’
taller.

If it has a teak bow sprit, it's most likely a tall rig.

Here is a random question that I think is rather important for me to know...
the PO of my boat did not know whether my boat is a tall or standard rig C27.
Is there an easy way to find out other than trying to get a tape measure to the
top of the mast?

Thanks!
