Hi Matthew,

Do you also have a low oil pressure alarm?

Anyway up and quit, if it did not seize due to low oil or a failed oil pump,
would make me check the points.

Most everything is electronic ignition these days (or diesel with no
ignition) but we all use to carry something that would work as a points
file. Typically the condenser would fail leading to a bigger arch on the
points when they open than was intended and then to a quick failure due to a
transfer of material leaving a spike that shorts across the gap. You could
file your way out of an emergency but you knew you'd need a new set of
points and a condenser soon.

Subject: [IC27A] Engine Trouble

After running my engine for a long time last week it just up and died. There
weren't any signs of trouble, no noises, no major temperature issues (it ran
all day at around 155-160). The only thing that seemed abnormal was the oil
gauge that kept jumping between 0-80. When we finally got towed back into
the marina there was a lot of black soot collected on the starboard side of
the transom. The engine has oil and gas and when I try to start it up it
wants to turn over but can't seem to get there. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Matthew
