loose connections for the ignition system, or bad coil. Shorting ignition  
wires - condensation in the engine compartment, ETC.
 
One of the interesting diagnostic instruments is an AM radio.
 
If you have a spark outside the engine block, there will be extra static on 
 the radio, especially when not on a station.
