Don't  know about a 78 model, but my tank came out  from under the starboard 
quarterberth thru the access panel.  86 model.  A very tight fit.

If you are no longer in need of the tank, I would take tin snips and cut the 
tank itself to remove it from the boat. Probably;y don't want to go at it with 
a saw as its going to create sparks. Given creative use of snips, hammers and 
hand saws - I think you could make quick work of it and not hurt the boat.

I had better ask about fuel tank removal. 
It appears (without the engine removed) that it has to be cut out of it's 
location. If previous posts are available I'd like to read them.
I want to retro-fit the drive to electric. Batteries could use that space.
