Hopefully you can get to the back of the instrument. Someone has extended the 2 wire & shield (bare wire) that come out the back of the instrument with a piece of 4 wire and shield cable. The transducer is like a speaker, it's not polarity sensitive, but you might phase it backwards. If you're in the water try black to black, shield to shield, and try the remain three options one at a time.
