On the front starboard side of the engine there is a throttle bell crank.  The
throttle cable attaches to it.  It is located on the forward end on the high
pressure fuel pump.  It has a pivot point with a smooth shank and threads on
the end.  The nut does not compress the bell crank so it can rotate.  I removed
the nut and added a spring washer over the smooth part.  The spring washer
gives it a little friction, but still allows smooth movement.  A spring washer
is very thin spring steel that has a slight curve.  They are very common on
aircraft, but I don't know if a hardware store would carry them.  You could
probably use a split washer and maybe some thin flat washers to do the same
thing.  It may take a few combinations to get it right.  It has been several
years since I did this and it works great.  The throttle is easy to move and
stay put.

Somewhere in the dark recesses of my mind, I recall a thread concerning tension
or friction on the throttle.  One of the suggestions was to put a cable clamp
on the throttle cable down in the engine compartment close to where the
throttle cable connects to the throttle control on the engine.  I have had the
top of the Edson unit apart once and thought I had fixed the engine throttle
control problem but it did not last.  Mine will not stay at a setting above
2000 RPM.  I have a piece of shock cord on the Edson pedestal which keeps the
throttle at whatever RPM I wish up to 2800.  Not pretty, but it works.

Maybe I will try the other solution one of these days.

On some of the Edson units, there is a 1/4" bolt which "squishes" the
nylon throttle bushing to create the tension. My 1985 model does not.
Though there is a dent in the casting where a drill and tap could be
used to create the threads for the bolt.

If you go to:

http://www.edsonmarine.com/support/PDFs/installation/EB396EngineControlInstr.PDF

on page 5, second picture under 11. The throttle is on the right. Note a
1/4 bolt hex head just to the right of the bushing keeper screw.
