Is it?  It doesn't look like a gag to me, but maybe I'm wrong.  Isn't it
just a loose-ring bit with some funky pieces of metal to keep it from
sliding through the horse's mouth?  Which makes me ask, why did he use loose
rings instead of a d-ring or eggbutt, and forget the extension-thingies...?
