Hi Kim,

That is my experience Kim.

Generally, but not always, it is easier for a 4-gaited horse to be a good
jumper with a rider.

Many of them, regardless of gait preference can jump very high, from a
standstill without a rider, if the motivation is there. I have seen
Icelandics clear a 4'6" fence from a standstill and have seen several easily
jump 4'. Luckily it is not usually stallions BUT Lettir has jumped over
several 4"+ fences when he felt he was unjustly taken away from his mares.
These were always fences without any electric wire inside the fence - with
any kind of electric fence we have found the stallions will stay in.

Jumping well without a rider does not mean they can do the same with a
rider.

Most people on the list have probably seen photos of Christine's Valur and
his jumping skill. He could jump about 4' very nicely, only with a rider
and won a hunter class in Challenge of the Breeds, against 12 other breeds,
many years ago.
