>>>> I am lucky too I suppose because I have a wonderful farrier as well. I have lived in 3 different states and all 3 farriers have been great. My mode of operation is to go to 2 or 3 very high end barns and ask them who they use and for them to describe their demenor and techniques. There are a few things when/if I hear them I will automatically cross them off my list but other than those things, I will start with one and see how it goes from there giving them a chance of course.
I think that's a good idea. When we got our first horses, I just used someone handy the first time or two, but then I started asking everyone I met who they used. I asked at the tack stores, the feed stores, the person we took lessons from...but mostly I asked the vets. (We had to try a couple of vets too - the first one switched to small animals only, then the second one moved back to teach at her old vet school...). That's what worries me - what if one of my horses gets a real medical emergency? I don't want to be shopping around then. It took a while to have one of those serious conditions but our farrier helped us get the ex-BL over his tripping, barefoot too, after just a trim or two. Then there were the laminitis attacks - three within about three years, with two horses. I was really glad I had kept calling the most recommended farrier I heard of, making sure he wouldn't forget we were on his waiting list. It paid off.
