I heard the barn swallows calling and flying about like mad yesterday. They built a nest inside our barn, about 30 feet up. I went inside and looked up and could see something up there and my heart sank as I knew it was a snake. Grabbed the ladder and my carrot stick and tried to dislodge the snake but could see he already had a chick halfway down so it was too late.
Does anyone have any good ideas of baffles, etc. that work? We have a post and beam type barn so I believe the snake climbed up the wooden post which is lying against the metal siding. Therefore, we have a 3-sided post to cover so a traditional baffle that goes around the entire post probably won't work. I know the snake was only doing what comes naturally but I would like to protect the birds if they lay another clutch. We had another nest outside that is completely surrounded by metal and that nest was destroyed. Now I know what got it but it seems this snake can climb smooth metal. Trish
