i think folks are different in different contexts. i'm certainly abrasive as heck in text, but a student (with some fear issues) just told me i'm incredibly reassuring as an instructor. i was thinking about how and why -- for one thing, i was taught to never raise my voice around horses, but tone of voice isn't a part of text interactions at all. and in person i do things like pet and kiss the pony a lot, give positive feedback on whatever the student's getting right, and sing (not very well) old beatles songs. i mean, whatever mental image my poor student had about disasters and falling off and breaking bones, i was pretty sure they didn't include a soundtrack of me singing "we all live in a yellow sub-ma-rine...." perhaps lee was the opposite? :) --vicka
