That's what I was thinking.  As for the Venice turpentine, it's a mild
caustic, which actually causes a blistering action.  I've heard that it can
be used - very sparingly - to toughen up soles for horses just starting to
go barefoot, but I can't imagine putting it on sensitive tissue.  I
considered it a couple of times many years ago when we were making the
barefoot transition, but never did, since mine made the move without any
obvious pain.  I guess I'm saying I don't know that I'd always avoid it, but
that I wouldn't use it on a whim either.
