There definitely is a hole at the top and bottom of the EZ-ride tapaderos.
There are fewer places for a sapling or stick to get stuck than with the
caged version, but the holes that are there are actually much bigger than
the holes in the cages.  I was surprised when I opened the pair that I
ordered.   I honestly think I like the cages ones just as well, but I guess
either is a big improvement over regular stirrups.  Mainly, I LOVE the
EZ-ride cushions - they really helped my tendency to jam my ankles.  I'm
never so sore in my knees and hips as I was when I used English irons.
