We used to use small tanks but since we now have so many horses, we've switched to large tanks. We have a well, and no power, no water. We've lost power for stretches over the years due to tropical storms and ice storms, and hauling water for 25 horses is an overwhelming task. The last time we had to haul water in, we only had eight, and that was a huge job - I can't imagine the ordeal of hauling water for 25. We have about 2-3 100-gallon tanks, each with a float valve, in each pasture now, so we keep about 4 days water supply at all times. We have a generator for the well, but once it wouldn't crank when we needed it, and once it was so icy that we could move it out to the well. I'd prefer to dump the water more often than we do, but it's a conscious decision we've made. Especially this year, as dry as it's been, I can't stand to see that much water dumped every day or two.
