When we had the long power outage from a huge ice storm back in 2000, we were very limited in where we could get water for the horses, since so much of the county was also without power, and the roads were a horrible mess. We got some of the horse's water from the pond near our house. Man, it was a CHORE to haul enough up in buckets - the ice was too thick and slippery for even the tractor we had then to cross, so we had to walk it on very slick ice, one or two buckets at a time. But, it worked. It reminded me that many horses DO regularly drink from ponds. I'd still love to be able to dump my water troughs daily, or at least every other day, but I have to be realistic.
