We consider that a horse has a short mouth if the length is less than the distance to the top of the nostril, average if it is the same length and long if it extends longer. I find that the mouth length changes quite a bit depending on the context - like everything else - but can be a good indicator in a given moment. Janice you said you thought all Icelandics had short mouths? I think there may be a tendency but I have seen lots with average or long mouths as well.
