I have a feeling i can imagine where this comes from, because I am guilty of it :) I had seen a video of a good gaited horse trainer working with several horses, and one of the horses was very high headed and the trainer suggested the person have quiet hands by placing them low on each side and leaving them there in one spot (thats what I HEARD) sorta on each side of the pommel and anyway, I just started riding all my horses like that, and I would notice of course one might lose gait with me insisting on that but i would persist. at least when I was trying to be formal. Good thing for my horses i would forget it about 90% of the time, just relax and ride and not worry about hands.
But at the Liz clinic I learned differently, how some horses need to reach and have a lower head to gait well, etc. Anyway, I imagine someone told that person to have a horse gait well to hold their hands at their crotch and they just started doing it all the time, with every horse.
