That ball-grabbing hand position is not accepted as standard with any of the clinicians I've ridden with, not with any Icelandic horse riders I know personally. Everyone tries for the light, following hand. The only people I know who use the ball-grabber are (usually) blokes who haven't trained their horses to accept contact and need to brace like mad to stop themselves being dragged out the saddle!
