Having come from the East Coast and knowing well the Applachian Mountains (as we spent every vacation there), there is also a BIG difference between "steep" back East and "steep" here out West. The mountains on the East Coast are hills compared to the mountains out here. Out west here, hills are really steep mountains, and the interstate pass over one of the largest mountain ranges, the Sierras, is jokingly referred to as "the Hill". So you really can't compare needing a breastcollar and crupper back East to here in the West. Apples and Oranges.
