[IceHorses] Join Up

I just started reading 'The Soul of a Horse' by Joe Camp and he
praises the Join Up method highly, that it helped him begin a
relationship with his horse by allowing his horse to choose if he
wanted to go to Joe or not.  I've read that Join Up isn't all that
great.  So, if not, why did it work so well for Joe Camp?  Does it
only work for certain horses/people?
