I think breeding for colour is OK providing conformation and character etc are put first in line, but if people actively breed against a colour, you do run the risk of actually "losing" that colour in a particular breed. And I think some breeds are completely mad in their colour rules, like the Exmoors, where if there's one speck of white anywhere they refuse to register a foal, even though you can trace it's ancestry back a million years...
