It's a hack that makes use of an invalid return status (-1) in an NSCA packet to attach a comment to either a host or a comment. I very deliberately opted to go "downwards" a sit looks like the normal expansion direction is "up". For regular NSCA packets it works just like the "stock" version. I think the entire modification is perhaps six lines of code.
