oh, sorry.  by "raw" I meant an interface that would accept
a query, and return answers, in some "unencoded" form like UTF-8,
as opposed to a different interface which would accept queries 
and return answers in an "ASCII encoded" form like RACE.
(but using the Unicode character repertoire in either case)
