You click on the irishgaming group on Yahoo and get told membership is
moderated.  Joining is still a single click away and a Yahoo ID isn't even
required.  This is still a lot simpler than signing up to a forum, for
example.  joebloggs @ somecollege.com or marybloggs @ irishISP.com or
whatever will likely be approved within a few hours, while
stringofrandomletters @ someforeignTLD.tw doesn't - at least till a mod sees
that their posts aren't spam.

Meanwhile, those who *don't* like spam are less likely to unsub from a list
that's no longer bothered by it.

Any community benefits from being open to new people, especially online
(exception: the Amish) but none benefit from having a reputation of letting
your inbox get filled with spam.
