forgot to mentino a possible obvious problem - linux kernel software
problems (e.g. problems with drivers for the specific SCSI controller, or
problems with the RAID code on the specific controller/disks. could also
be configuration problem).

questin is:

what exact type of SCSI adapter is connected to the RAID's disks?
according to the log:

ncr53c8xx (driver used), and the device:

ncr53c876-1-<0,*>: FAST-20 WIDE SCSI 40.0 MB/s (50 ns, offset 15)

most SCSI errors reported are for sdc, others are for 'sdf' (host 1,
channel 0, id 0/3, lun 0). i don't know what this means.
