Why not just automate it?

It shouldn't be too hard to write a short script that'll read the data from
finger.kernel.org once in a while.

BTW, I'm using up2date on production redhat 6.2 server without any
problems - redhat still release updated rpms for this version (well, except
for OpenSSH/SSL I guess, because they weren't included in this version..)
