My 2-year old consumer-grade board (nForce 3 chipset for Athlon 64) has 3
slots of up to 4GB each, totaling in 12GB, so indeed it shouldn't be a
rarity today. I guess this RAM can be somehow used (PAE?) even without
x86-64.

However, Ira might be right that 64GB RAM machines are still in the
industrial server range.
