And to set the gateway manually (will only last till you reboot again), do

$ sudo route add default gw <ip address of gateway> eth0

This would fix it (temporarily).

Gateway of 0.0.0.0, I think, means that nodes on this subnet are
reachable directly. You don't have a routing rule set which would send
packets to, say, gateway "10.138.1.1".
