Thanks a lot, I got my audio problem solved by your suggestion, except
for the following very minor problems:

1. The toggling of the mute key does not toggle the color of the light
of mute key. i.e. it does not glow RED for muted sound.

2. The variation in the volume is only in the last portion. i.e. it is
rather logarithmic rather than linear as it is in windows vista.

But it is okay. I am too much happy today to listen some sound on  my
LINUX. Thanks again.

I will be able to try the solution for the wireless tomorrow from the
institute, as I am not able to use the apt-get / synaptic from my
home. The problem seems to be related to the proxy. Is there any way
out ?
