sharing swap space - Yes
sharing /home - not tested but my created some problem but probability
is very less. I was having Debian and installed Fedora while keeeping
/home intact. there was a minor issue of permission of /home
directory. keep the username same.

Do you want to cut a branch of tree while standing over the branch ?
use LiveCD , reboot and boot with liveCD and create some free space
and install Ubuntu 8.04 in that space.

Try and report problems,
