My thoughts on the subject,

1. Your newspaper example is anecdotal and has no bearing in this matter.

2. Such decisions (regarding policy) should be taken at least by
consensus (though I am not entirely happy with a democratic system
myself -- it lends too much power to donkeys since they form the
majority) and not by you or me in such high-handed way.

3. Since this example involves Mangat (though I do not wish to take
specific names or person's behaviour), he has been fairly active and
has contributed to this mailing list. Does this incident offer enough
grounds to ban someone?

4. This group is more about learning rather than something requiring
military-style conduct and discipline (even the military follow due
process). There have been enough incidents of top-posting, and
SMS-gibberish entertained, what draws the line here? Why don't we
correct the "spammer"? Why don't we make the culprit realize their
mistake instead?

I remember somebody pointing out earlier (I think it was on this list)
that this is the place to learn how to ask questions intelligently or
something or about using proper language and relating it with future
job prospects. *sheesh*.. Anyway, it's probably true. You have to
learn somewhere.

5. I appreciate your enthusiasm in about getting a "policy making"(?)
process in place but your faith (in me) is rather misplaced :P. You
and me, we are already bogged down with enough work (hopefully). I try
to chip in when I can and with what I can :) Also, I am not active on
the wikipage so I am again probably the wrong person to remind about
updating the wiki page.

6. IMHO, a warning in such cases should suffice. People who just
sign-up to advertise their "events" or "cause" should be banned
immediately. Anyway, that's again just my opinion. This requires more
discussion. Input from regulars and irregulars welcome! :)

Thanks for reading the long mail :P
Sharad

PS: cc-ing to Mangat as well. I don't know if he'll be receiving this
mail via the mailing list.
