If the point is to improve how things are done, IMHO, I don't think mailing lists are enough (though they certainly are fairly popular). I think a better solution would be a crossover between a forum and a mailing list. It is futile to discuss certain problems only to have the same question repeated several times. Which also brings me to two other category of emails we sometimes get on the mailing list -- repeat emails and spam. The interaction with the communication system should stress on looking up prior discussions as well, in a well categorized way. May be the notion of keywords or categories help (slashdot?). Much like stick it notes. It has been attempted before in mailing lists but it doesn't catch on. The same thing has been stressed in this thread earlier as well. What we should realize is that clearly there is something lacking in the mailing list mechanism which people, sometimes unconsciously, are trying to fix with such attempts.
