Same thing happened to me a couple of days ago. The problem in my case was
that the lightdm had stopped working, so I had to switch to gdm.
Follow these steps :

1. Press Ctrl+Alt+F2 and login manually by providing username and password.
2. Type: *sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm*
3. Choose gdm from the menu and exit. Then reboot.

If gdm doesn't show, install it using *sudo apt-get install gdm* and repeat
step 2 and 3.
