Subject: Re: [Ilohamail-devel] contacts
I'm not convinced enforcing a unique name field has a net-positive
effect on usability. I like fields to be free-form as much as possible,
so that users have the maximum freedom to use the feature as they like
it. The way it is now, if a user wants multiple entries for "John
Smith" because he knows 3 John Smiths, he can do so. If the user finds
that confusing, he also has the option of entering disambiguating labels
like "John Smith (coworker)", "John Smith (dude at the bar)", etc.
It all started because I found it confusing that if I import contacts, I may
end up with multiple similar entries that look alike and have to browse
through them to find the right one. So, my idea to make name unique came
from there, because it would enforce having to ask if a similar entry should
be added or overwrite the old one or skipped, etc...
Basically, I think it was Dean who said that some such questions could be
added to the add or import dialogue instead of changing the database.
Also, a contacts search would be cool, but one of the things I was
planning on working on next was an Ajax auto-complete feature in the
message compose window.
That is definetely something I want to have! :-)
Cheers,
Martin
