 Bad example:  VHS survived the war mostly because it was licenced and
cloned by everyone and available from many manufacturers. This is much
more akin to Linux which has multiple vendors and support companies in a
'compatable-yet-competative' market, while Microsoft is the closed system
(and they are even lobbying to make Windows emulators illegal without
licences from Microsoft).

  Where the example falls apart is that Betamax was, at the time, better
technology while I doubt many would argue Windows as being better overall
technology ;-)
