You seem to be understanding the post upside down.

The example was to show that Betamax had a much better technology as
Video filmmakers can attest than VHS but VHS got the stronghold in the
home video market as it had a longer playing time than Beta and it was
open technology. The other reason is that SONY kept a tight lid on Beta
just like Microsoft does and prevented it from flowering. They learnt it
much later when VHS took the market.

By the same token Linux is a much better technology than Microsoft
software and it wins on both counts i.e. technology and price but
Microsoft is better marketed and as I observed 'preloaded' without the
user knowing that he has a choice as another person noted about Compaq
(Re: COMPAQ SUCKS) in this list. It proves my point that simply having
superior technology doesn't mean you will be adopted by the millions out
there, you have to be proactive in promoting your stuff.

Had Linux enthusiasts made the mistake SONY did, we wouldn't have this
forum.
