This is a long post.
Topic : X problem with RH6.0
The powers that be at RH seem to have come to know about the statements and
observations I made about the RH 6.0 distro. After going thru the thread on
bugginess of RH 6.0 on this list, I decided "OK.. may be *me* is going wrong
somewhere. So one last time.. I am going to start from scratch and get RH6.0
up and running on my lab machine. I had put up RH6.0 on my lab machine earlier
but somehow it stopped (fatal termination) during the boot process at "Finding
module dependencies..." "
So here is how the story runs..
1. On my 4.3 GB HDD, Disk Druid recognised the Win 95 partition as 16 bit DOS
FAT and incorrectly recognised the NTFS partition as OS/2 HPFS. Consequently a
mount failed. However, this is understandable because there _are_ a whole lot
of similiarities between NTFS and HPFS , so may be the 'internal signatures'
are not correctly differentiated by Druid. I can compile the Kernel with the
NTFS module. Thats OK.
2. Then , I decided to load "everything". Don't envy my 1.2 GB partition ;). I
am tired of selecting :( Fair enough. Went OK.
3. The mouse probe worked ! Wow . I have an unbranded mouse which which got
happily married to the Generic driver. So did the NE 2000 Compat.
4. Strangely the X configuration part dumped me. I got the "familiar" (to me)
RH screen saying that "This part of the installation failed.
Retry:Previous:Menu" I retried.. to no avail. Only the X config part was left
so I completed the install , skipping X installation. I thought , at that
point that I would make good by running Xconfigurator or XF86Setup.
5. startx said c"command not found". Obviously.
Now the tragedy :(
6. Xconfigurator ran , threw me that beautiful red and blue screen and then
exited. Error : Could not read card Database
XF86Setup dumped too.. the error was slightly less cryptic though. Error
reading database : Could not find /usr/X11R6/lib/Cards
End of the story, morning glory.
No amount of cajoling would see X back on its feet. Could anyone help me ?
I have previously succesfully run X / KDE/GNOME/fvwm2 on this machine which
sports a SiS 6215 using Generic driver. Bad quality.. but works. Good enuff
till I coax the authorities to change the card.
BTW:RH6.0 stynx. Ugh
Indra , I am really saving up to buy a distro from you.
Love,
PID
