Well, it _is_ very much doable, in fact when I am using RedHat these days, 
thats the way I am working to make sure things work properly in the end. 
However, I agree that doing it for the first time came be a bit of a 
scary experience... 

However, as I have repeatedly tried to point out that currently a lot of 
ppl are getting interested about using Linux, many of whom don't strictly 
come in the bracket of techies (ie. they lack the hacker mentality). For 
them and installations in non-technical environments, a customized Redhat 
install is still a better option at this point of time, IMHO.

There is another thing I have been doing in the past with some amount of 
success. I have been compiling the src of programs that get bundled with 
only  a particular distro, under another distro I may be running...eg. I 
have quite a few nifty Debian utils/apps running under RedHat. 

In fact, rather than sticking to just what I get with a particular distro, I 
find that I have a higher productivity using a mix-n-match approach and 
building a system that does what I want it to do.
