Nirjhar,
Your view of this user group is slightly warped. MS is *not* a taboo topic here.
However, for all the obvious reasons
(since this is a LUG list) discussions hovering on the theme of Dos/Windows tend to
become off-topic after a point.
The "Windows" you speak of "Older people" being comfortable with is W9x. Everyone
knows that its a bloated, buggy,
unsecured client OS. Put the same group of "Older people" in front of a NT box, and I
wouldn't bet on how long their
level of comfort stay the same. Linux on the other hand, is a production grade server
OS ...in its true form its not
for general PC users as yet. Most of the commercial deployment of Linux as done by me
and quite a few others on this
list have been as server installations. Its not really fair to compare a client OS
with a server OS. (Would you compare
Windows CE with Windows NT???)
About the age-wise composition of this group, there are a fair number of members who
are over 35/40 ... JPM of course
is much more senior (not really fair to compare anyone with a hard-core techie like
JPM).... If older people are
"interested" in Windows, the reason is often that they have never heard of Linux or
lack the idea about its specifics.
Of course, you are free to form your own ideas. But in this case, you are entertaining
a totally a wrong notion about
Slackware being taboo...it is *not*... Not a single person on this list has said
anything to that effect. It should be
noted that most ppl were united in their opinion about RHL shipping a buggy distro.
Regarding your query about pop3d not working....you have not supplied enuf info about
your setup or the version of
pop3d you have d/led...it is difficult to answer to queries in this way. There are
certain known issues or bugs with
certain particular versions of a particular s/w....unless you are a bit more specific
its difficult to try to help....
Please be more explicit.
BTW, have you read the Shadow-Password HOWTO?
Cheers,
--Indra.

It appears, in this forum, one should not utter a single word regarding
DOS/WINDOWS. But I face the reality. Older people are interested in
Windows and they use Microsoft Outlook. In number of cases, it is working
with both REDHAT and Slakware (One should not utter this word also).
But in one REDHAT installation, it is not working. It is saying
authosisation failed. I have got the POP3 downloaded, compiled and
installed. It may be for the installation of REDHAT with passwd/shadow
file.
Can I get help?
