Bless your cousin. Good girl. Now about the popularising part, you may have a chance
of getting some popularity for
linux (and possibly yourself) provided the install session doesnt turn out to be a
nightmare. A nice new machine is your
safest bet for the popularity polls. Those flashy gnome desktops at e.themes.org (if
you/your cousin havent seen 'em
yet, do the needful) need some decent firepower.
Of course all that is null and void if you/cousin enjoy hacking unix from CLI.
