Just to put in a note, I doubt the type of 'interactive' stuff you
would be interested in would be the type to cause problems. I do
recommend you look at some of the itneractive possibilities. One thing
I have been doing a fair bit these days with is the PHPSlash system
(Very much still a work in progress). Check out
http://www.voterussow.org/ and http://Ottawa2000.flora.org/ for
examples of these types of systems.
FYI: There is a dedicated MySQL box behind the servers - 9G Ultra-Wide
SCSI, 256M RAM, K6-II 450 - Just running basic OS and MySQL. This is
what I plan to move most of the FLORA discussion groups to from the
current system I'm using for archiving (MhonArc/etc).
Keep me in the loop as I have ideas, but I say you should go for it -
I'd love to see some cool OSS website tools come out of ILUG-CAL!
P.S. Any of you have an Apache/PHP/MySQL setup at home where
development work can be done? While having the production system in
Ottawa may make sense, I don't suspect that developing things that way
is the best way.
P.P.S.: If you are thinking there is downtime problems, please let me
know. I may already know - anything that goes wrong with those servers
gets posted to http://www.flora.org/flora.status/
