the file that defines the steps is called 'INSTALL', and can be found in the
directory created by untarring/unzipping the alsa package. it contains a
more or less detailed set of instructions. the file it asks to edit is,
however, not /etc/conf.modules, but /etc/modules.conf, which doesn't exist
by default on a redhat 6.2 system and has therefore to be created.
