sorry for keeping the original email.

most likely reason is. a job is there in the queue in the linux server. so
when you connect it starts printing. the gibberish that you talk about
happens when the wrong driver is used to print. it happens with windows as
well but rarely the way you mentioned. delete all the jobs in the queue in
linux. and see if you can get a linux driver for it.

my epson photo 720 deskjet printer is giving problems. when i
configure it under linux (autodetected by mandrake 8.1), it would
initially print gibberish without stopping, page after page, and i
would have to turn the power off in order to make it stop. whenever i
turn it on (while running linux), the same thing starts again. if i
remove the paper from the tray, it turns on the "no paper" light, and
as soon as i put in some paper and press "page feed", it starts
gulping pages incessantly - until i turn off the power again.
the strangest thing is, once i configure it under windows (it's a
dual-boot machine), print a test page, and then come back to linux
and use it, it would behave perfectly normally. no problem at all!

it also developed some hardware issues over time, like not being able
to feed pages properly etc (not even in windows), and yesterday i had
a mechanic come and see it. he did this and that and after some time
it was printing okay under windows. like most mechanics, this fellow
knew nothing about linux, and since windows printing was okay he took
the money and left.

now when i am trying to print in linux, it starts eating pages, and
prints only a horizontal segment of a line on a page, spew it out,
print the next segment on the next page, spew it out, print the
next... etc. it is taking three pages to print a single line.
but under windows it's perfectly normal.

since i don't expect to get professional help for printing under
linux, this forum is my only hope. is there a great difference
between how windows and linux handle inkjet printers? what are the
possible things that may have gone wrong here? i am using CUPS, and
the foomatic+gimp-print drivers. the printer settings are okay as far
as i have been able to verify.
