well, i have almost the same config as u have (192 megs of ram, and
600@672 mhz p3). However my box runs absolutely smooooothly with kde and
other fancy stuffs:)
regarding ur performance problems...what driver are u using...there are
drivers from NVIDIA...check those out.
and disable all unneccesarry services that deadrat enables thru the
ntsysv utility

PS: and for graphics being smoother...how about turning on
anti-aliasing??
