in linus' autobiography, he writes about (in a pretty much lay man's terms) why he favored and still does monolithic kernels. Goign back to the famous AST vs LT mail-war on the comp.os.minix newsgroup, he makes it clear that contrary to intuitive belief in "modular" architecture, he made a clear choice to create Linux as a fat, mono kernel. He admits that although theoretically microkernels look lucrative, they are just that: theoretic. He does speak a little good (IIRC) about Hurd though, but I too doubt whether he would break from a mono to a micro architecture.
