But it is up to people like us, who are enthusiastic about free
software, to remedy the situation, at least as far as free software is
concerned. I say this with all seriousness.

Ach! Pardon me for directly contradicting the above statement but no
graphical frontend is required at least as far as developing software is
concerned. That kind of interface is needed for the purportedly "dumb"
user. In fact, a GUI can be a positive hindrance to using the full power
of a Unix-like OS. I have still to figure out how one can use
arbitrarily complicated pipes through a pull-down or drag-and-drop type
of GUI.
