Next to the government, the major purchaser of software remains the academic
domain. Given the licensing policies and strategic business decision of the
players in the domain of proprietary software, FLOSS attempts to fill the
gap in this playing field. One of the major reasons of non-penetration or
low usage of Linux in academia is the perception and the self-feeding myth
that Linux installation entails increased cost centers. On a projected cost
estimate basis, studies have shown for a 3 year period that this is
unfounded. Perceptions about lack of support is negated by the presence of a
vibrant and active user community. Well documented software suites are
available that ease the migration slack time. Given the penalties involved
in using non-licensed software, the availability of "free"
toolkits,reliability and security afforded by the paradigm, scalability and
ease of administration and the egalitarianism involved in the ownership of
intellectual property, FLOSS and particularly Linux is the future for the
academia.
