Suggestion: Don't avoid the philosophical synergies between FLOSS and more traditional academia -- it will appeal to the 'eggheads' to finally make that connection. Both rely on peole getting paid to 'share knowledge', and exist in an environment where knowledge becomes more valueable the more it is shared (rather than the artificial scarcity of an otherwise non-rivalrous resource that exists with Software Manufacturing, and intellectual monopolies in general).
Note: I grew up being told that Highschool teachers were the worst software pirates. As I got involved in FLOSS I realized that it was a culture and morality clash at work, not that there was anything actually wrong with what the teachers were doing. FLOSS is much more culturally and morally in-tune with the majority of teaching.
