Hi,
I had a same kind of problem with my modem. Using wvdialconf didn't
work for me. I used "redhat-config-network-druid" then. It went fine.
This package comes with RedHat 8.0 and if you haven't got it installed,
you will find the rpm in the installation cds. After setting it up, I
used "redhat-control-network", a frontend for dialing. As for a neat
frontend, I use "gkrellm"(also included in RedHat 8.0). Besides
monitoring your box, it has a switch just below the ppp monitor. This
dialer switch uses the command "ifup" and "ifdown" to open and close the
connection respectively.
So take a note on the package list:-
                1>redhat-config-network-druid
                2>redhat-config-network
                3>redhat-config-network-cmd
                4>redhat-control-network
(Just invoke them from the command prompt)
Get these...and get going.
*NOTE*--redhat-config-network-druid may not detect your modem....don't
lose heart...show him the way to the modem and it should obey you
rightly.

Best of luck....
Subhankar
